On October 15, 2011, the UPLB Astronomical Society again conducted an outreach program in the form of lectures to High School students of the same school (Laguna State Polytechnic University- Sta. Cruz, Laguna). This event was part of the Astronomy Awareness Project of the organization.
Around 120 students attended the event. Lectures on The Moon and Jupiter were the main topics of the night. In depth explanation of the phases of The Moon were explained and some interesting facts were also discussed. Some upcoming events including the Lunar Eclipse on December were also announced.
Of course, a lot of facts about Jupiter were also taught. They were amazed how a Filipino astronomer contributed to that body of knowledge when he discovered the Red Spot Jr.
For the last lecture of the evening, constellations and some common names of asterisms were introduced. The students then engaged in a conversation about stargazing because afterall, that was the highlight of the event.
Later that evening, three telescopes were setup and the students enjoyed viewing The Moon and Jupiter. They were amazed to sea the craters of The Moon. It was also their first time to see a planet using a telescope.
The organization believes that we have somehow contributed to the promotion of science especially astronomy in the country. We think that the students learned a lot from us even though we have limited equipment. Of course, there would be more events like this in the next semester
